Instruction of the Great Man Made River(GMMR) Project in Libya

(Part 1)

A concerned government authority of Libya found out a quantity of underground water in a southern area of Sahara desert during explore for oil in 1950. In accordance with above mention, Libyan government announced to implement the pipeline project from 1984 to 2009(25 years) which water deliver from the well points in Southern Sahara desert to the areas of Tripoli city and Bengazi city including Northern Coastal areas in order to cultivate crops.

This project comprises 4 packages, that is, first package is to deliver water from the well points in Southern area to the districts of Bengazi and Sirte, second package is to deliver water from the well points in Fezzan area to the districts of Tripoli, third package is to deliver water from nearby the Egypt boundary to Tuburk district and fourth package is to deliver water from nearby the Gadames area to the area of Tunish boundary. While this project is called the Eight Wonders of the World as its large scale and technical difficulties in construction.

Dong Ah Construction Company(Dong Ah) contracted the estimated cost of US $ 330 billion(3300 million) which include the length of pipeline works to be installed 1,874 Km, the construction site where 955 Km from Sarir well points to Sirte district, and 919 Km from Tazebo well points to Bengazi district, also the period of project is from 1984 to 1991(7 years). The operation of this project comprises three companies that Dong Ah Concrete Company fabricates Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe(PCCP) at Sarir and Brega concrete factory, delivery pipes from factory to site by Korea Express Transport Company and installation works of pipeline by Dong Ah Construction company.
